Christy Wilhelmi is the driving force behind Gardenerd.com. Her obsession with gardening began in 1996 on the balcony of her Los Angeles, California apartment.

She eventually became a member of Ocean View Farms Organic Community Garden in Mar Vista, California and has served on the Board of Directors for the last 8 years.

Christy also wrote, co-directed, edited and hosted a weekly lifestyle television show, The Garden of Life: whole life wellness through gardening, fitness and food.

Christy believes that gardening unifies both physical activity and healthy food choices, while providing a grounding spiritual and creative outlet.

She has dedicated herself to the study of organic gardening and its benefits, and delights in sharing this information with anyone who will listen. She is your one-stop-shop for gardening resources and information.

Christy Wilhelmi the Gardenerd

Nature’s Umbrella – During the hot summer weather, give tender veggies a mid-day reprieve from the sun by planting them under the canopy of existing larger plants.  Mature Brussels sprouts, artichokes, and tree kale all can provide shade for delicate greens.  Plant your seeds or transplants just under the outer leaves of these towering beauties, and while they will still get plenty of sun, they will be less inclined to bolt to seed.
