1. October in the Garden

Leaves are turning colors and squash has suddenly become the decoration of choice on front porches across America. It's October - time for root vegetable stews and simmering soups on the stove. I don't know about you, but I'll need those extra veggies to counteract the pantry full of Halloween candy lurking in the dark.

Our fall garden is coming to life as the weather cools down. Our first rain seemed to fuel the kohlrabi into a growth spurt. Parsnips and carrots are poking up out of the ground, while the Swiss chard that we planted out last week grows to promising size. We had to replant some kale due to a cutworm attack, but the broccoli seems to be holding its own. See this week's tip for help on how to keep the birds from getting your peas - like they did to ours.

We'll be celebrating fall this weekend at the first ever HomeGrown Culver City. Come by and see us if you're in town and get special discounts on all your favorite Gardenerd Gear.

Happy Gardening,

Christy

2. Things to do with Pumpkins

Pumpkins are so versatile. You can stack them like snowmen, you can bake them into a pie, and you can carve them into decorations for Halloween. We've shared some of our favorite things to do with pumpkins on the Gardenerd Blog:

3. Gardenerd Tip of the Month - Bird Netting

Birds can be a delightful addition to the garden, but they can also be a detriment to your newly planted seedlings. They also seem to know exactly where seeds were planted and eagerly pluck out the tiniest sprout before the roots can take hold. If that's happening in your garden, it's time for some evasive action.

Bird netting, sometimes called strawberry netting, is a fine-mesh vinyl net that lays on top of your garden, usually draped over hoops or stakes. It keeps birds from getting to your babies and is easily removed when the plants are big enough to fend for themselves. You can find bird netting at many local nurseries, or you can get it here.
