Gardenerd Tip of
the Month: Tree People
It seems that every year, the department stores put out
decorations for winter holidays earlier and earlier. I swear I saw Christmas
ornaments hanging on plastic trees in September! No wonder I am feeling like
the holiday season has snuck up on me - you would too, if you thought you
had until December to untangle your twinkly lights. So, in an effort to ease
the holiday shopping burden, we've introduced a new item to the Gardenerd
lineup that you'll want to get for all your Gardenerd friends and family.
Don't miss the chance to give the gift of brand-spankin' new Gardenerd garb.
Meanwhile, out in the garden...
While a good portion of the country has experienced their
first frost, Southern California gardeners are busy harvesting the young
leaves of heirloom lettuces, cilantro, spinach, arugula, and mustard greens.
I've enjoyed a few homegrown salads so far, and with succession planting, my
husband and I should be up to our eyeballs in salad greens from now until
spring. November has also been a continuation of October's "clean up" time:
dividing the Mexican sage, pruning the buddleia (butterfly bush), and
attempting to save a terribly overgrown lavender bush (oh the horror). It's
also time to stop picking roses to initiate dormancy. Most of all, it's time
to plant bulbs - glorious bulbs - life's little answer for black-thumb
gardeners. Anyone can grow them (just dig a hole, throw in the bulb, bury it
and wait), and they bring so much joy in such a small package.
I'd like to take a moment to express thanks ('tis the season,
after all) to all those who have supported Gardenerd.com this year, either
by making a purchase or sending me feedback on these newsletters. It's great
to hear from you and I hope you'll continue to send your thoughts my way.
I'd also like to thank my editor (A.K.A. husband) Andrew for diligently
combing through the material before it hits your mailboxes. He's saved me
from a number of embarrassing spelling and grammatical errors. The next
newsletter will have more info about our plans for Gardenerd in the coming
year. Until then, have a happy Thanksgiving!
Having options is a great thing. With the new Dark Long
Sleeved T-shirt you can choose from Black or Gray. Each bears our whimsical
Gardenerd logo and will keep you looking fashionable in the garden this
fall. Click

What do you give the person who has everything? Well, you can
give the world a gift in that person's honor. Tree People, a non-profit
organization, has been planting trees for over 30 years, offering
"sustainable solutions to urban ecosystem problems" through education,
training and activism. Tree People will plant one tree or a grove of trees,
depending on the size of your donation. Each gift planting comes with a
certificate that you can wrap up and put under the Christmas tree or
Chanukah bush. So think again when you reach for that gift box of Drakar
Noir. Give the gift of clean air instead.
