1. December in the Garden

December 21 is the first day of winter. Is the ground covered with snow where you live? Here in Southern California and other warm-winter climates, we miss out on the white Christmas, but we are starting to enjoy what was planted in September and October.

Broccoli is forming a head, lettuces are in abundance and some carrot varieties are big enough to pick. We've been enjoying beets (if you can use that word), kale, Swiss chard, green onions and herbs from garden. We've still working through our summer harvest of winter squash, garlic and shallots to make hearty warm soups and stews on cold days.

If you are thinking ahead to spring, don't forget to order your bare root fruit trees for planting in January/February (in Zone 9/10). I'm convinced that cold weather was made for reading seed catalogs and dreaming up next years' garden. It's a great gift to have some down time (and time to forget the aphid infestations and rat attacks) before diving in once again to the gardening year. We at Gardenerd wish you the best in 2012, and hope that we can grow great gardens together next year.

Happy Gardening,

Christy

2. New eHow Gardening Videos

Last month Christy recorded 13 new videos for eHow to answer some basic gardening questions. We've picked out our favorites to share with you this holiday season. Find all the videos on eHow by searching their website for Christy Wilhelmi, or click this link.

To start you off, here is a helpful video about preventing cabbage moths from attacking your brassicas:

3. Gardenerd Tip of the Month: Label-GMOs

We don't usually get political here at Gardenerd, but this one is a bi-partisan issue that effects everyone. California is taking steps to get GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) ingredients labeled on all food sold in the state. Though it has been ignored by government on the national level (despite the fact that over 90% of Americans surveyed stated that they wanted to know if GMOs were in their food), a ballot initiative to force GMO labeling is now being taken up state by state.

The ballot initiative has been submitted, so now we wait, but when the time comes, the initiative will need at least 800,000 signatures to be effective, and those signatures must be gathered within a 150 day time limit. This will mean all hands on deck. How can you help and participate?

1) Start by reading up on the proposed ballot measure, and find out if your state (if you live outside of California) has one too. There are at least 5 other states working on the same initiative.

2) Volunteer if you can. If you can't volunteer, donate.

3) Spread the word. Tell your neighbors in your community garden, share it with teachers and parents at school. Kids are powerful teachers too and they can help create future generations without GMO-contaminated foods.

Many times in our country's history, what happens in California leads the way for the rest of the country. Wouldn't it be good to know what's in your food? We grow our food to know where it comes from, but let's not leave the rest to chance if we can do something about it instead.
