1. SEED
STARTING
February is known for the frequent and
sometimes annoying references to love and Valentine's Day.
Gardeners, however, can sidestep the entire issue and enjoy a wholesome,
fulfilling relationship with their garden. There's no more
infectious time to feel the love than right before the dawn of spring.
January is the time to fantasize about a
lush garden filled with color and foliage. Every corner becomes a
tapestry of possibility for new seed varieties. If you spent
January snuggling up to all your favorite seed catalogs, you are ready
to put thought into action in February and March.
Starting seeds at home expands the realm of
possibility further than Home Depot could ever take you. Whether
you have a window sill or a full blown greenhouse, you can start flower
and vegetable seeds with a little effort. Here are a few ideas to
get you started:

3. GARDENERD
TIP OF THE MONTH: Coir
What the
heck is Coir? How do you even pronounce it? Do tell...
Coir,
pronounced coy-yer, is the fibrous outside layer of coconuts and
is used as an alternative to peat moss. It holds moisture better
that peat moss, is natural, economical and completely environmentally
sustainable. Use in place of peat moss when mixing up a batch of
soil for pots, or add it to your existing soil to help improve loam and
water retention.
Coincidentally, we will be discussing coir more completely in the
Gardenerd Organic Gardening Series,
which starts next week, February 23, 2008 at 9:30 a.m.
