Ready or not, here comes spring! I can almost feel the layers
of winter falling away as we start to experience the change in the air. The
rains have brought fresh air to Southern California, and the time has come
to start our spring gardens. I'm in hog heaven this year, because not only
do I have my patch of land at the community garden, I have my new home
garden to plan as well. On the list for the new raised beds at the house:
strawberries, asparagus, artichokes, and a few other permanent crops that I
haven't been able to commit myself to planting before now. Check out the Tip
of the Week at
Gardenerd.com to get a head start on your spring planning and planting.
Speaking of the new website, there have been some good
questions coming in through Ask Gardenerd. If you want to learn more
about how to combat snails, or how to create an indoor herb garden, take a
look at this month's Blog. Answers to each question are located in the
Sage Advice category. If you have a burning gardening question, take a
minute to visit the site and fire away. I'd love to hear from you! Coming
soon on the Gardenerd blog: a complete list of crops to plant this season.

Okay, it may seem too early for tomatoes, but the truth is
that it will be here before you know it. In fact, one of my favorite garden
related outings is right around the corner on March 23-25, 2007. It's Tomato
Mania! I'm nearly speechless when it comes to this event. Imagine this: over
400 different varieties of beautiful green leafy tomato plants in
alphabetical order - including heirlooms, hybrids, organics - sprawled out
over the enormous parking lot of a local farm stand. Highly informed helpers
canvas the area awaiting your tomato questions. They have tomatoes for
coastal areas, tomatoes for mountain areas, tomatoes that do best in
containers. You name it; they probably have it (or something even better).
For a complete schedule of events, it's best to get on their mailing list.
